This state-of-the-art facility, built in 1991, is located on site at the NTSWA Landfill #1 in Hamilton Township, Tioga County. It was constructed to transfer municipal wastes from this site to the NTSWA facility in West Burlington Township, Bradford County, since municipal waste disposal operations at Landfill #1 were no longer permitted.
This totally enclosed facility can handle a variety of waste collection vehicles ranging from packer trucks to passenger vehicles. The floor is concreted with drains to collect any liquids associated with the collection of these wastes. The liquids or leachate is collected in holding tanks which is periodically shipped to the NTSWA Leachate Treatment Facility for final disposition. The overhead doors and other enclosures prevent blowing litter and other nuisances.
As wastes come in, they are dumped into a live bottom transfer trailer. Once the payload of this trailer is acheived, it is taken for disposal by NTSWA owned and operated vehicles. This transfer of wastes only includes municipal wastes. Residual wastes, from industries, are directed to the NTSWA Landfill #2.
Overall, the NTSWA Transfer Station plays an important role in our ability to conduct an integrated solid waste management system. It allows NTSWA, private haulers and residents themselves to deliver wastes to a facility other than the NTSWA Landfill in West Burlington Township. This makes our system more cost efficient and convenient.Go to Next Stop
