Northern Tier Greens
"Harvesting Energy for a Greener Tomorrow"
The Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority (NTSWA) has been utilizing landfill gas to operate a reciprocating engine to turn a generator for over 7 years. Through the utilization of the waste heat produced by the generator engine, NTSWA developed Northern Tier Greens. The greenhouse uses a number of unique approaches to commercially grow lettuce type crops for regional sales.
CAT 3520 Engine
Northern Tier Greens captured all of its initial concepts plus the use of "controlled environmental agriculture" (CEA). CEA enables the grower to produce agricultural crops not normally grown in a specific geo-graphical area through manipulating an enclosed environment.
The Northern Tier Greens project uses a portion of our "waste" heat and un-sellable electricity. NTSWA uses a deep pool, raised hydroponic bed technique, and utilizes 96 growing lights that are run at night. NTSWA has a seeding room/office and head house (where the product is harvested and packed). The grower uses a cubed growing medium vermiculite that eliminates the need for soil. When the lettuce is harvested the root cubes stay intact, along with the roots. This practice provides for a longer shelf life, and holds 40 times its weight in water.
Our produce is sold at local wholesale and retail markets in the following varieties:

Upland Cress Romaine Boston Head Lolla Rossa Pak Choi Red Oak
Hydroponically Grown Pesticide and Herbicide Free
